S8300 Media Server can be a part of a larger private phone network. Connecting the S8300 into
a private network involves physically linking the systems (nodes) together with the appropriate hardware. In
addition, it normally involves activating and administering network software so that the linked systems
appear to be a single system.

ETN, UDP, and AAR

At a basic level, you can connect an S8300 with other switches with an Electronic Tandem Network (ETN).
In an ETN, each location has a switch that serves as the main switch for users at that location, but each main
switch also processes phone calls to destinations on another main switch in the network.
In a basic ETN network, your users can call users on other switches by dialing a trunk access code
(normally 8) and then dialing the 7- or 10-digit phone number of the user. In this case, you can also use the
Automatic Alternate Routing (AAR) feature on the S8300 to allow users to dial extension numbers for users
on other switches. With AAR, the switch translates dialed extension numbers into the actual phone numbers
of the target destinations and processes the calls. However, you may also use the Uniform Dial Plan (UDP)
feature on the S8300 to allow extension number dialing between main switches. UDP allows you to define a
single, comprehensive dial plan for all switches in the network. With UDP, every extension number is
unique within the network.

ISDN-PRI and IP Networks

The S8300 Media Server can connect to other switches via ISDN-PRI trunks or IP trunks. ISDN-PRI trunks
allow the private network to use public telephone networks. ISDN-PRI trunks connect to the S8300 using
the Avaya MM710 T1/E1 Media Module. Additionally, private networking and ISDN-PRI software must be
enabled via the License File.
IP trunks allow the private network to use a private Ethernet LAN/WAN. The S8300's processor LAN port
connects the S8300 to an IP network. Additionally, private networking, ISDN-PRI, and H.323 trunk
software must be enabled via the License File.
