4. Click
to complete the installation process and close the wizard.
Finish
5. Connect the CANview USB device to the PC with the help of a USB cable
and wait until the ON LED is constantly on green.
6. Connect the CAN/power cable to the CANview USB device, using an
external termination resistor, as shown in Fig. 4-8.
For more detailed information on the termination resistor, see chapter
4.2.2.1.
7. Connect the CAN/power cable's M 12 connector to the CANlink GSM /
UMTS device.
4.2.2.1

CAN bus termination

In each bus system, signal reflections at the end of a wire or cable can cause
interference which is one reason for transmission errors. To minimize these
reflections a terminator is placed at each end of a transmission line. This terminator
has to match the characteristic impedance of the transmission line.
In CAN bus networks, normally unshielded twisted pair cables are used for signal
transmission. These cables have a characteristic impedance of approximately
120 Ohms. Thus a resistor of 120 Ohms has to be placed at each end of the CAN
bus line between CAN-High and CAN-Low to reduce the reflections and enable
correct communication.
4.2.3

Connect power supply

1. Connect the power supply to the CANlink GSM / UMTS device.
For the coaxial power connector assignment, see chapter 3.4.1.
2. Connect the power supply to an electrical outlet.
If you are using a power supply not explicitly recommended for CANlink GSM /
UMTS 5xxx, make sure that it is capable of peak currents of up to 2 Amps at
6 V DC. Otherwise the device will not register with a network provider.
For a list of current consumption values at different supply voltages, see chapter
9.2 Electrical data.
