Use a Coolant Conditioner Test Kit in order to check
the concentration of the SCA.
Add the SCA, If Necessary
NOTICE
Do not exceed the recommended amount of supple-
mental coolant additive concentration. Excessive
supplemental coolant additive concentration can form
deposits on the higher temperature surfaces of the
cooling system, reducing the engine's heat transfer
characteristics. Reduced heat transfer could cause
cracking of the cylinder head and other high tempera-
ture components. Excessive supplemental coolant
additive concentration could also result in radiator
tube blockage, overheating, and/or accelerated water
pump seal wear. Never use both liquid supplemental
coolant additive and the spin-on element (if
equipped) at the same time. The use of those addi-
tives together could result in supplemental coolant
additive concentration exceeding the recommended
maximum.
Pressurized System: Hot coolant can cause seri-
ous burns. To open the cooling system filler cap,
stop the engine and wait until the cooling system
components are cool. Loosen the cooling system
pressure cap slowly in order to relieve the
pressure.
NOTICE
When any servicing or repair of the engine cooling
system is performed the procedure must be per-
formed with the engine on level ground. This will al-
low you to accurately check the coolant level. This
will also help in avoiding the risk of introducing an air
lock into the coolant system.
1. Slowly loosen the cooling system filler cap in order
to relieve the pressure. Remove the cooling
system filler cap.
Note: Always discard drained fluids according to
local regulations.
2. If necessary, drain some coolant from the cooling
system into a suitable container in order to allow
space for the extra SCA.
3. Add the correct amount of SCA. Refer to the
Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill
Capacities and Recommendations" for more
information on SCA requirements.
4. Clean the cooling system filler cap and inspect the
gasket. If the gasket is damaged, discard the old
filler cap and install a new filler cap. If the gasket is
not damaged, use a suitable pressurizing pump in
order to pressure test the filler cap. The correct
pressure is stamped on the face of the filler cap. If
the filler cap does not retain the correct pressure,
install a new filler cap.
Driven Equipment - Check
Refer to the OEM specifications for more information
on the following maintenance recommendations for
the driven equipment:
• Inspection
• Adjustment
• Lubrication
• Other maintenance recommendations
Perform any maintenance for the driven equipment
which is recommended by the OEM.
Electronic Unit Injector -
Inspect/Adjust
The Electronic Control Module produces high
voltage. To prevent personal injury make sure the
Electronic Control Module is not powered and the
unit injector solenoids are disconnected.
NOTICE
The camshafts must be correctly timed with the
crankshaft before an adjustment of the unit injector
lash is made. The timing pins must be removed from
the camshafts before the crankshaft is turned or dam-
age to the cylinder block will be the result.
The operation of Perkins engines with improper
adjustments of the electronic unit injector can reduce
engine efficiency. This reduced efficiency could result
in excessive fuel usage and/or shortened engine
component life.
Adjust the electronic unit injector at the same interval
as the valve lash adjustment.
