• More than one section of the belt is displaced in
one rib of a maximum length of 50.8 mm (2 inch)
Adjust
The engine is equipped with an automatic belt
tensioner (2). Manual adjustment of the belt is not
required.
Replace
The tensioner (2) has a square drive (3) that can be
used to remove the tension from the belt, allowing the
belt to be removed. For a full description on replacing
the belt refer to Disassembly and Assembly,
Alternator Belt - Remove and Install.
Compression Brake - Inspect/
Adjust/Replace
(If Equipped)
Contact your Perkins distributor or dealer for the
correct procedure.
Coolant (Commercial Heavy-
Duty) - Change
Clean the cooling system and flush the cooling
system before the recommended maintenance
interval if the following conditions exist:
• The engine overheats frequently.
• Foaming is observed.
• The oil has entered the cooling system and the
coolant is contaminated.
• The fuel has entered the cooling system and the
coolant is contaminated.
Note: Inspect the water pump and the water
temperature regulator after the cooling system has
been drained.

The cooling system drain valve is towards the bottom
of the radiator.
Drain
Pressurized System: Hot coolant can cause seri-
ous burns. To open the cooling system filler cap,
stop the engine and wait until the cooling system
components are cool. Loosen the cooling system
pressure cap slowly in order to relieve the
pressure.
1. Stop the engine and allow the engine to cool.
Loosen the cooling system filler cap slowly to
relieve any pressure. Remove the cooling system
filler cap.
2. Open the cooling system drain valve.
Allow the coolant to drain.
Flush
1. Flush the cooling system with clean water to
remove any debris.
2. Close the drain valve.
