Glossary

Adapter
A device that receives a connection or service request.
BOOTP
BOOTP (Bootstrap Protocol) is a procedure for automatically assigning IP addresses and
other parameters (e.g. subnet mask and router address) in a TCP/IP network.
CIP
Message-based application protocol. This protocol implements a relative path for sending a
message from the modules that generate the message in one system to the modules that
consume the message. CIP operates with a generator-consumer model rather than a
source-destination model (master/slave). With a generator-consumer model, the volume of
network traffic is lower and transmission times shorter.
Configuration
Configuration is the systematic arrangement, setting, and networking of the individual
3RW5 soft starters within the device or network view.
Configuring
This section refers to the configuration and parameterization of 3RW5 soft starters.
DHCP
DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is a procedure for the automatic assignment of
IP addresses, even when the equipment is running. A DHCP server assigns the necessary
parameters such as IP address, Subnet mask and Router address to the connected clients.
Diagnosis
Data that is transferred from the 3RW5 soft starter and indicates the current operating status.
EDS file
The properties of an EtherNet/IP device are described in an EDS file (EDS = Electronic Data
Sheet) containing all the information required to integrate the device into an EtherNet/IP
system.
