Permanganate solution (e.g. 0.1 N)
Sulphuric acid (25 %)
Manganese sulphate solution (1 %)
Place approx 10 ml sulphuric acid (25 %) in 20 ml of sample
water.
Then titrate with permanganate solution (e.g. 0.1 N)
NOTE
After the first addition of permanganate solution, it may take
several seconds for the sample to discolour. You can accelerate
this change in reaction by adding 5 drops of manganese
sulphate solution (1 %).
Continue to add permanganate solution until the sample
stays pale pink in colour.
IMPORTANT
It is essential that you avoid large excesses of permanganate
(which turns the sample purple)!
In the second stage of titration the permanganate would be
taken as being peracetic acid and thus would distort the result!
Note the consumption A of permanganate solution (in ml).
