Hardware Installation MSM765zl Overview The HP ProCurve Networking MSM765zl Mobility Controller is a Services zl Module-based WLAN controller. It plugs in to either the 5400zl or 8212zl switches. The MSM765zl Mobility Controller is referred to in this document as the MSM765zl. New switches need to be prepared according to their supplied documentation.
Hardware Installation Installing the MSM765zl Installing the MSM765zl Installation Precautions ■ Static electricity can severely damage the electronic components on the MSM765zl. When handling and installing the MSM765zl, follow these procedures to avoid damage from static electricity: • Handle the MSM765zl by its bulkhead or edges and avoid touching the components and the circuitry on the board.
Hardware Installation Installing the MSM765zl Insert the MSM765zl aligning with the guides in the slot, and slide it into the slot until it is fully inserted. Once the contacts have engaged, use the extractor handles to seat the MSM765zl completely. Tighten the screws.
Hardware Installation Installing the MSM765zl Verifying the MSM765zl is Installed Correctly When the MSM765zl is installed properly, it undergoes a self test that takes a few seconds. This happens both when the switch is powered on after installing the MSM765zl, and when the MSM765zl is installed while the switch already has power.
Hardware Installation Environmental Specifications Environmental Specifications Temperature Operating Non-Operating a, b 0°C to 40°C (32°F to 104°F) -10°C to 65°C (-10°F to 149°F) Relative humidity 15% to 90% at 40°C (104°F) 15% to 90% at 65°C (149°F) (non-condensing) Maximum altitude 3.0 km (10,000 ft) 4.6 km (15,000 ft) The maximum operating temperature specification of the chassis is...
Getting Started Overview This chapter describes how to connect to the switch, activate an MSM765zl, configure the switch for the MSM765zl, and then perform initial MSM765zl configuration. Finally, information on restarting and resetting the MSM765zl is provided. Connect to the Switch Although full information on the switch command line interface (CLI) is provided in the switch documentation, the basic switch CLI commands needed to work with the MSM765zl are provided in this document.
Getting Started Configure the Controller Open a terminal session with the switch and press Enter several times until the welcome screen appears. (A different screen may appear if another session was already open.) Press any key to continue. The switch CLI prompt appears. It looks similar to this: ProCurve Switch 5406zl# If instead, the switch menu is shown, return to the top-level menu and...
The MSM765zl must be activated and booted before its own CLI can be used. The MSM765zl uses the Service OS CLI on the MSM765zl for activation. The MSM765zl ships with an HP ProCurve MSM765zl Software Activation License Registration Card in the box. The License Registration ID is printed on this card.
Getting Started Configure the Controller Note how the prompt changes to indicate that you are now in the Service OS CLI. Obtain and record the MSM765zl Activation Hardware ID: licenses hardware-id activation The Activation Hardware ID is displayed. Record this string precisely as displayed, including the dashes.
Getting Started Configure the Controller Install the Product License Key The starting point for this procedure is the Service OS CLI prompt for the MSM765zl you are activating. If you do not have this prompt available, follow the directions in “Obtain the Activation Hardware ID”...
Getting Started Configure the Controller About MSM765zl Ports The MSM765zl features two ports, Internet and LAN. These ports do not have RJ-45 Ethernet jacks. Instead, these ports connect through the switch backplane and are mapped to specific RJ-45 jacks on an Ethernet module by VLAN configuration in the switch.
Getting Started Configure the Controller Select VLAN Names. Add two VLANs, one for the Internet port and another for the LAN port. For example VLAN ID 10 with name MSM765_Int for the Internet port and VLAN ID 20 with name MSM765_LAN for the LAN port: Select Back to return to the VLAN Menu.
Getting Started Configure the Controller Select Edit and then use the arrow keys to move the highlight down to the DEFAULT_VLAN column of port C1. Ports C1 and C2 respectively define the VLAN assignment for the MSM765zl Internet and LAN ports. Use the space bar to change values and the arrow keys to move between items.
Getting Started Configure the Controller Assign ONLY MSM765_Int to port A1, and ONLY MSM765_LAN to port A2. Use the space bar to change values and the arrow keys to move between items. Moving from left to right, set port A1 to No, Untagged, No.
Getting Started Configure the Controller Initial MSM765zl Configuration Determine Switch Index of the MSM765zl The starting point for this procedure is the switch CLI prompt that looks like this: ProCurve Switch 5406zl# Before you can launch the MSM765zl CLI you must first determine the switch- assigned index of the MSM765zl.
Getting Started Configure the Controller Assign an IP Address to the MSM765zl LAN Port The starting point for this procedure is the CLI prompt that looks like this: ProCurve Switch 5406zl# To set the MSM765zl LAN port IP address: Select the MSM765zl of interest, specifying the slot and index determined earlier.
Getting Started Configure the Controller Configure the computer to use a static IP address in the range 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254. If necessary, enter the subnet mask. For example, in MS Windows, the subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 is entered automatically when you tab through the field. Set the default gateway to 192.168.1.1, and DNS server to 192.168.1.1.
Getting Started Configure the Controller 11. At the password prompt it is recommended that you change the password. Enter the new password and select Save. The management tool home page opens. 12. In the Network Tree select Service Controller, and then in the menu select Network >...
Getting Started Configure the Controller 14. Select DHCP Client and Configure. The Internet port - DHCP client configuration page opens. 15. Optionally assign an alternative DHCP Client ID to the MSM765zl. Select Save. 16. The MSM765zl requests an IP address from the DHCP server. You are returned to the Internet port configuration page.
Additional Documentation For detailed information on managing and configuring the MSM765zl, see the MSM7xx Controllers Management and Configuration Guide. The latest version of this and all HP ProCurve Networking documentation is available at: www.procurve.com/customercare/support/manuals/index.htm. Restarting and Resetting the MSM765zl Restarting the MSM765zl It is recommended that you use the management tool to restart an MSM765zl.
Getting Started Configure the Controller Resetting an MSM765zl to Factory Defaults Use the management tool to reset an MSM765zl to factory defaults. In the management tool, select Service Controller >> Maintenance > Config file management > Reset configuration > Reset. When you reset the MSM765zl to factory defaults, it loses its LAN port IP address and Internet port configuration.

Hardware Components Replacing the Disk Drive C a u t i o n A 5-second delay is mandatory between removing an MSM765zl, and either re- installing it, or replacing it with another. To replace one MSM765zl with another, or to remove a MSM765zl without replacing it, use the following procedure: Unscrew the retaining screws enough to disconnect them from the threaded holes in the switch.
Hardware Components Replacing the Flash Card Re-install the MSM765zl into the switch. 10. Use an equal amount of pressure and push both extractor handles closed to completely seat the MSM765zl. 11. Tighten the retaining screws. Retaining Screws Extractor Handles Disconnected Retaining Screws Figure 8.
Hardware Components Replacing the Flash Card Using the extractor handles, pull the MSM765zl out from the slot and turn it over. Slide out the old flash card by applying slight pressure to the top of the flash card. Position the new flash card properly and slide it in being careful not to bend any connector pins.
