Before you remove the hard disk drive cage and backplane assembly, complete the following steps:
1. Read "Safety" on page v and "Installation guidelines" on page 973.
2. If the compute node is installed in a Lenovo Flex System chassis, remove it (see "Removing a compute
node from a chassis" on page 975 for instructions).
3. Carefully lay the compute node on a flat, static-protective surface, orienting the compute node with
the bezel pointing toward you.
To remove the hard disk drive cage and backplane assembly, complete the following steps.

Step 1.
Remove the cover (see "Removing the compute node cover" on page 986).
Step 2.
Remove the hot-swap hard disk drives and hard disk drive bay fillers (see "Removing a hot-swap
hard disk drive" on page 1009).
Step 3.
Lift up on the rear of the assembly to disconnect it from the connector on the system board.
Step 4.
Remove the assembly from the compute node at an angle.
If you are instructed to return the hard disk drive cage and backplane assembly, follow all packaging
instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.

Installing the hard disk drive cage and backplane assembly

Use this information to install the hard disk drive cage and backplane assembly.
Before you install the hard disk drive cage and backplane assembly, complete the following steps:
1. Read "Safety" on page v and "Installation guidelines" on page 973.
2. If the compute node is installed in a Lenovo Flex System chassis, remove it (see "Removing a compute
node from a chassis" on page 975 for instructions).
3. Carefully lay the compute node on a flat, static-protective surface, orienting the compute node with
