SETTING UP A MULTI

Setting up a multi is simplicity itself. The outer wheel is used to select the part and the inner
wheel is used to set data values, etc.. Let's now see how to make up a simple multi.
Firstly, you need to load in a few sounds. Referring to the sections that explains the LOAD
mode, load a few programs.
NOTE: It is suggested you use the IND P+S (individual programs and samples) selection. For
the first program and samples you load, use the CLEAR option to clear out any junk that may
be in memory. After you have loaded the first program and its associated samples, just use
LOAD so that the new programs you load are added to the programs in memory. Load in
something sensible. For example, load in a drum kit, a few acoustic and electric pianos, a few
bass sounds and some string and/or pad sounds. We will use these sounds as the basis for
this tutorial.
Assuming that you now have some programs in memory (you can check this in SINGLE mode
by scrolling through them with the DATA wheel), press MULTI. You should see something like
this screen:
This is showing us that the multi currently in memory is called MULTI FILE 1, the default name
given to a multi when you power up the S2000 (you can rename it to something more suitable
as we shall see later). Now, let's imagine we want to arrange our multi as follows:
Part 1 Drums
Part 2 Piano
Part 3 Bass
Part 4 Strings
We will hammer out a basic rhythm into our sequencer using the drums program so that we
have a rhythm to play the other parts to and then we will overdub the piano chords, bass part
and string chords. It was suggested that you have a few pianos, basses and string/pad sounds
- this is so that we have a choice of alternative sounds for each part.

ASSIGNING PROGRAMS TO A MULTI PART

In MULTI mode, press PAGE DOWN once - you will see something like this screen:
Here we see the program assigned to PART 1. If you have just powered the S2000 up and
loaded the sounds suggested above, you will see the default TEST PROGRAM in this part (if
the part shown is not PART 1, either flick the outer wheel to the left until PART 1 is selected or
move the cursor to the PT 1 field and use the DATA wheel to select PART 1). The program
number is also shown in the top right of the display. This field is not accessible but is shown for
your information only should you wish to use MIDI program change commands to select
programs remotely in the part.
To assign the drums program to it, with the cursor on the program name field (press F2 if
necessary), simply use the inner DATA wheel to scroll through the programs in memory until
you get to the drums program. You should see something like this:
