DAT BACKUP/RESTORE

If the optional output expander is installed in the S2000, one very useful function of the digital
interface is that of DAT backup. This allows you to make safety copies of your data on a simple
DAT tape. This can be invaluable for archiving a hard disk when it is full and helps you
overcome the problem of lost data in the event of a problem occurring with your hard disk.
You may back up the contents of the memory or your hard disk DAT if you wish. These
functions are avaliable on the next group of pages. The first of these is this:
No selection process is required here as you are simply dumping all the internal memory onto
DAT. When backing the memory contents to DAT, 2 Meg will take about 30 seconds. If you are
backing up the contents of your hard disk to DAT, each 2 Meg volume takes about 100
seconds - this speed difference is due to certain SCSI control considerations.
To restore a memory backup back into the S2000, go to the next page down:
Ensuring that the digital output of the DAT machine is connected to the S2000's digital input,
locate the data you wish to load into the sampler, press EXEC and start the DAT machine
playing. No selection process is required as you are simply loading the data into memory.
To back up the contents of your hard disk, press PAGE DOWN.
Here you can back up the entire contents of a selected hard disk partition.
Select the partition you want to backup using the DATA control. You will note that as you
change partitions, there will be a small delay as the S2000 gets each partition ready. To
perform a backup, assuming the digital output of the S2000 is connected to the digital input of
your DAT machine, simply press RECORD and PLAY on the DAT (or whatever combination is
required on your particular DAT machine) and, ensuring that the DAT is actually recording,
press EXEC. The S2000 will backup to DAT. As it is being backed up, so you will see the
names of programs, samples, etc., as they are transferred to the DAT machine. When backing
up the contents of your hard disk to DAT, 2 Megs of data takes about 100 seconds.
Restoring a DAT backup back onto your hard disk is done on the next page down:
The process is pretty much the reverse of the backup process. Assuming the DAT machine's
digital output is connected to the S2000's digital input, firstly, select the partition you wish to
restore to using the DATA wheel. Now locate the data on the DAT tape. Press EXEC (F1) on
the S2000 and start the DATA tape playing. As the data is being received by the S2000, so
you will see the names of the programs, samples, etc., displayed in the LCD.
Data is saved in a digital audio format and but the sample headers and program information and
other data are stored in a special format. During the save, both DAT channels are used but
when restoring, only the left hand side is used.
