CREATING MULTI-TIMBRAL SETUPS IN SINGLE MODE

Although we recommend the MULTI mode for such purposes, using the 'old Akai' method,
you may create multi-timbral setups within the SINGLE mode. The process is much the same as
for creating layered programs except that each program has a different MIDI channel.
To create a multi-timbral setup, assuming you have loaded the programs you wish to use,
select the first of the programs in SINGLE and press EDIT. Press PAGE DOWN once to set its
program number (PNUM) and MIDI channel.
Now press PAGE UP once, select the next program, press PAGE DOWN once and renumber
this program to the same as the first and set a MIDI channel as appropriate for your application.
Repeat the process for all the other programs you wish to combine in your multi-setup. All
programs must share the same program number but each one should have a different MIDI
channel (unless, of course, you also wish to layer some programs within this multi-timbral setup
- i.e. have piano and strings on MIDI channel 5).
It must be said that you may need to have a pen and paper handy to keep track of the
programs' various MIDI channels.
You may, of course, have several such multi-timbral setups in memory, each one using a
different program number (i.e. a backing track for one song on program #1, another on
program #2, another on #3, etc.), and these may be selected as single programs using MIDI
program change commands or by using the DATA wheel in SINGLE mode.
As mentioned several times so far, however, we strongly recommend you use the MULTI
mode for such applications as it is a lot easier to use and a lot faster to setup. It is also much
easier to try out different combinations of sounds and the fact that in MULTI mode you can do
this in real-time as the sequence is playing makes setting up a MULTI far more intuitive. The
ability to have multi-timbral setups in SINGLE mode is mostly retained for compatibility with
earlier Akai samplers so that you can load such sound library and play it immediately without any
conversion process. When creating new multi-timbral setups in the S2000, we imagine you will
probably use the MULTI mode.
