APPENDIX 2

DATA COMPATIBILITY ISSUES

With any advance in technology, certain problems arise regarding data compatibility between
older and newer models (witness the chaos with PowerPC software!). At Akai, we have tried to
make models as compatible as possible both backwards (i.e. using data from new models on
older machines) and forwards (i.e. using data from older machines on new ones). However,
there are a few things owners of older Akai samplers should be aware of.

SOUND DATA

The S2000 can use programs and samples created on the S900, S950, S1000, S1100,
S2800, S3000 and S3000.
When using S900/S950 disks in the S2000, you will receive the message:
As the samples are being loaded, you will see the message:
The S2000 is converting the 12-bit samples from the S900/S950 format into 16-bit sample
data the S2000 can use.
An S1000/S1100 disk can be read with no problems but when you save it to an S2000 disk,
there are a few things you should be aware of.
The S2000 allows 512 items to be saved on a floppy or hard disk (on the S1000/S1100 it was
64 items for floppy and 128 for hard disk). As a result, the whole format of the disk directory is
different.
If you try to save to a floppy disk that was formatted on an S1000 or S1100, because the disk
directory is different, the S1000/1100 disk has to be re-formatted to S2000 format. You can do
this 'manually' if you wish by formatting the floppy using the FLOPPY FORMAT procedure
described in GLOBAL but, when saving, if you use WIPE, this process is done automatically for
you.
If, however, you use SAVE instead of WIPE, the S2000 will prompt you:
Press F2, WIPE, to re-format the disk to the S2000 format and save the data. If you have any
doubt at all about proceeding with this, press F1 - CANCEL - to abort the process.
NOTE: If you think you will want to use this disk again in an S1000 or S1100, you are advised
to save the S2000 data to a different S2000 formatted floppy disk unless you have software for
the S1000/1100 that can read S2000 disks.
The same is true of S1000/S1100 hard disk volumes. Simply using SAVE when you try to save
to a hard disk volume that was originally formatted using an S1000 or S1100, will cause this
message to be displayed:
