SINGLE MODE

SINGLE MODE
Once you have some sounds in memory, you want to be able to play them. The simplest way to
play programs is in the SINGLE mode. Here, you can play individual programs and is therefore
ideal if you want to simply 'play' the sampler (i.e. play a piano solo or whatever as opposed to
sequencing multiple programs in combination). Pressing SINGLE will display this screen:
If you have just turned the S2000 on, you will see the default program called TEST PROGRAM
here. The number to the right indicates the program number 1 - 128. On the bottom line, you
will see the message ? PROGS ACTIVE. This shows how many programs are currently
selected (see next page - NOTES REGARDING 'OLD AKAI' METHOD).
After loading some sounds from disk, however, you may see something like this:
This shows that program #1 called 'BIG STRINGS' is selected to play and only one program is
active. The 'active' program (i.e. the one selected to play) is indicated with an asterisk against its
name.
It is possible, however, for several programs to share the same program number. In this case,
selecting a program number where several programs share the same program number, you
may see something like this:
This indicates that there are twelve programs numbered #1 which have been selected. All of
them may be played simultaneously (see below - NOTES REGARDING 'OLD AKAI' METHOD).
If there is more than the one program in memory, these programs may be selected using the
inner DATA wheel or via MIDI program change commands from your master MIDI controller. You
number using the outer SELECT wheel.
may also select the program
You will note, however, that the DATA wheel selects the program name . Because several
programs can share the same program number, the actual program number shown in the top
right hand corner of the screen may not always change (see next page - NOTES REGARDING
'OLD AKAI' METHOD).
When programs share the same number, they may be played simultaneously (for example, two
programs PIANO and STRINGS may share the same number and so, when you play them, both
will sound as a layer of piano and strings). This may seem contradictory to be able to play
several programs in 'single' mode but this is retained for compatibility between data created on
older Akai samplers and the S2000.
