Glossary

This glossary defines abbreviations and new
or special terms in this publication.
Some of the definitions are taken from the
IBM Dictionary of Computing. The letters in
the parentheses that follow some definitions
indicate the source of the definition:
(A) The American National Standard
Dictionary for Information Systems, ANSI
X3.172-1990, copyright 1990 by the American
National Standards Institute (ANSI).
(E) The ANSI/Electronic Industries
Association (EIA) Standard-440-A, Fiber Optic
Terminology.
(I) The Information Technology Vocabulary,
developed by Subcommittee 1, Joint
Technical Committee 1, of the International
Organization for Standardization and
International Electrotechnical Commission
(ISO/IEC/JTC1/SC1).
(IBM) The IBM Dictionary of Computing,
copyright 1994 by IBM.
(T) Draft international standards committee
drafts, and working papers being developed
by the ISO/IEC/JTC1/SC1.This glossary
defines abbreviations and new or special
terms in this publication.
A
Automated Cartridge System Library
Software (ACSLS) The software within a
Unix-based server that interfaces the server
and hosts; it also maintains a list of all tapes
within a library.
Advanced Interactive Executive (AIX)
The operating software for an IBM RISC
System/6000.
audit • A part of the tape library IPL
sequence that catalogs all tape cartridge
95845
locations. This data is retained in the MPC
card memory.
Host audit—A host request to catalog the
tape cartridges of a tape library by SCSI
element or tape library number, panel, row,
column.
automatic mode A relationship between a
tape library and all attached hosts. Tape
libraries operating in automatic mode handle
cartridges without operator intervention. This
is the normal operating mode of a tape
library that has been placed online to all host
CPUs.
B
backward read compatible (BRC) The
ability of a tape drive to read data forward or
backward. Contrast with "NBRC" (below).
C
CAP See cartridge access port.
cartridge The plastic housing around a
cartridge tape. A plastic leader block is
attached to the tape for automatic threading
when loaded in a transport. The spine of the
cartridge contains a Tri-Optic label listing the
volume identification number.
cartridge access port (CAP) An assembly
allowing an operator to enter or eject
cartridges during automated operations.
cartridge drive A device that reads from or
writes to a magnetic tape.
cartridge tape Magnetic tape enclosed in a
plastic housing.
catalog The inventory of all tape cartridge
storage locations in an L700 tape library; this
