Do NOT include measurement frequency outliers (results that are obviously out-of-

range) in the computed "FREQUENCY AVERAGE" result. Remeasure or delete the
outlier measurement, see
Only use an external smart phone microphone and not the smart phone internal mic.
l
An external microphone makes it easier to physically do the measurement, the ability
to place the microphone into tight spaces, and, more importantly, to help isolate the
belt vibration sound from surrounding noises resulting in more repeatable and accur-
ate measurements.
The room must be quiet to achieve good measurement results. External sounds will
l
interfere with the belt tension vibration sound resulting in inaccurate measurement
results. The external microphone will help to lessen the effects of surrounding noise
interference.
Be as consistent as possible between measurements. Pluck the belt in the same man-
l
ner and hold the microphone in the same position for each measurement.
Practice make perfect. Do not get frustrated, it takes practice to learn the best sonic
l
belt tension measurement technique. The plucking technique and position of the mic
can make a big difference in the measurement results. Also, each belt application has
its own unique properties. Plucking the belt like a guitar string is a good starting point
firm but not to hard. Hold the mic facing the belt approximately 1" from the belt.
Continue to practice until your technique produces reasonable consistent frequency
results.
