We recommend that you watch the Gates Carbon Drive U – Measuring Belt Tension instruc-
tional video. The video will show you how to use the Gate Carbon Drive app to make a sonic
belt tension measurement. It does take a little finesse and practice to learn how to make a
good sonic belt tension measurement. Take note of the gentle but firm belt plucking tech-
nique (like plucking a guitar string), the position on the belt where you pluck the belt (half
way between the pulleys), and the position of the microphone (approx. 1"/2.5 cm away from
the vibration center). Select the video for your particular smart phone type
There is a difference in the Gates video hardware setup, we require the use of an external
microphone rather than relying on the internal smart phone mic. An external microphone
makes it easier to physically do the measurement, the ability to place the microphone into
tight spaces, and to help isolate the belt vibration sound from surrounding noises resulting in
more repeatable and accurate measurements.

The "FREQUENCY AVERAGE" result is the sonic belt tension frequency used to

spec the belt.
The "FREQUENCY AVERAGE" is the average of three individual belt tension
l
"FREQUENCIES" measurement results. Always include three frequency results in
the "FREQUENCY AVERAGE" result.
