Solving Hard Drive Problems

CAUTION:

Problem
Cannot access
hard drive.
Reading the hard
drive takes an
unusually long time
after restarting
the computer.
Hard drive error
occurs.

Maintain an up-to-date backup of your hard drive in case
Possible Cause
Hard drive is not
seated properly.
Hard drive was
inserted while
computer was on, in
Suspend, or in
Hibernation.
Hard drive may be
damaged.
System is exiting from
Hibernation.
Hard drive has bad
sectors or has failed.
Solution
Shut down the computer,
remove and reinsert the
hard drive, then turn on
the computer.
Shut down computer,
then turn it on again. The
hard drive is initialized
when the computer is
turned on.
If the hard drive is in the
MultiBay, try inserting
another removable drive.
Contact your
Compaq authorized
service provider.
Give the system time to
restore the previously
saved data to its exact
state before Hibernation.
In Explorer, click the
drive letterÆFileÆ
PropertiesÆError
CheckingÆToolsÆ
Check Now button.
Run Computer Checkup
to test the drive. (Refer to
Chapter 14.)
