Chapter 1: Introducing the IBM 5500 Express IP Control Unit
The 5500 Express IP Control Unit provides TCP/IP networking for 5250
enabled twinax clients, previously impossible with remote twinax
connections.
The 5500 Control Unit also provides:
• Connectivity of Express twinax clients to pre-V4R2 AS/400s through
either a local area network (LAN) or a wide area network (WAN), using a
SLIP connector, serial line Internet protocol (SLIP) connection
• Connectivity of Express twinax clients to V4R2 or higher AS/400s
through either a LAN or a WAN, using point-to-point protocol (PPP), or a
SLIP connection
• TCP/IP e-business application support for twinax-based client
workstations
• Twinax network station boot support
The following section describes the AS/400 and the twinax client
connections.
All communication through the 5500 Control Unit to the remote AS/400 is
based upon internet protocol (IP).
Two RS232 ports connecting through ISDN (integrated services digital
network) or asynchronous modems allow remote connections to an AS/400
host. Transfer protocols--PPP or SLIP--are based on the remote AS/400 type.
The following is a list of software and hardware requirements for the host:
• AS/400 with OS/400 Version V3R2
• SLIP or PPP connection enabled (dependent upon AS/400 type and
OS/400 version)
• External asynchronous Hayes compatible modem or external ISDN
modem
The following list of requirements allow connection of the 5500 Express IP
Control Unit to the client workstation:
• PC workstations with a minimum 486 processor and PCI (Peripheral
Component Interconnect), PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card
International Association), or ISA (Industry Standard Architecture) slots.
