For 2-pair or 3-pair RJ11 connections, the USOC standard is commonly used.
The configuration for this standard is shown in Figure 74:

Important: When terminating UTP wire with RJ connectors, use the correct
type of plug for the type of wire that you are using. Although most RJ plugs
appear to be similar, there are several major types:
• Solid wire, round cable
• Solid wire, flat oval cable
RJ plugs crimp the copper wire and provide strain relief to the cable:
Crimping
Using the incorrect plug results in unreliable connections. For solid wire
installation, RJ plugs straddle the copper wire when crimped.
Strain relief
To provide strain relief to the cable, the RJ plug opening must match the cable
type (round or flat oval). For all UTP cable, use a flat oval plug. Solid wire is
used for almost all UTP cable that is used in long point-to-point runs (for
