Self-Diagnosis
Cause of fault
♦ Alternator faulty, battery se-
verely discharged
♦ Severe load on the electrical
system shortly after starting
because of high charge cur-
rent and ancillaries
♦ Contact resistance in positive
supply or earth connection for
engine control unit
♦ Current drain with the ignition
off
♦ Voltage regulator at alternator
faulty
♦ Excess voltage caused by
jump-starting or quick-charger
♦ Not possible
♦ Basic setting of throttle valve
control unit not carried out
♦ Setting of throttle cable not
o.k.
♦ Throttle valve potentiometer in
throttle valve control unit
faulty
♦ Throttle valve mechanism jam-
ming
♦ Unmetered air downstream of
throttle valve
♦ Increased engine load result-
ing from ancillaries
♦ Unmetered air downstream of
throttle valve
♦ Increased engine load result-
ing from ancillaries
- Test voltage, charge battery
- Increase engine speed
slightly for a few minutes and
switch off ancillaries
- Test voltage supply of engine
control unit ⇒ page 24-25
- Eliminate current drain
- Test voltage, replace regulator
if necessary
- Interrogate fault memory
⇒ page 01-5
- Adapt engine control unit to
throttle valve control unit
⇒ page 24-51
- Interrogate fault memory
⇒ page 01-5
- Set throttle cable
⇒ 4-Cylinder Engine, Mechani-
cal Components; Repair
Group 20; Removing and in-
stalling parts of fuel supply
system; Servicing throttle
mechanism
- Eliminate cause of fault, re-
place if necessary
- Eliminate unmetered air
- Eliminate load, switch off an-
cillaries
