6.1 Installing without a local optical drive

The X6 family servers do not have a local optical drive. To install an OS, you can use any of
the following methods:
6.1.1, "IMM" on page 186
6.1.2, "Local USB port" on page 188
6.1.3, "Preboot eXecution Environment (PXE)" on page 188
The following sections provide details for each method.

6.1.1 IMM

A remote control feature is available through the IMM2 web interface. You must log in to the
IMM2 with a user ID that has Supervisor access. You can also assign to the server a CD or
DVD drive, USB flash drive, or disk image that is on your computer.

Follow these steps to mount a drive through IMM2:
1. Connect to the IMM2 with your web browser.
2. Click the Remote Control button on the main page of IMM2 as shown in Figure 6-1.

3. If you want to allow other users remote control access during your session, click the Start
Remote Control in Multi-user Mode button. Otherwise, click Start Remote Control in
Single User Mode.
