5.3.1 System power settings

Power settings include basic power-related configuration options:
IBM Systems Director Active Energy Manager (Default: Capping Enabled):
The Active Energy Manager option enables the server to use the power capping feature of
Active Energy Manager, an extension of IBM Systems Director.
Active Energy Manager measures, monitors, and manages the energy and thermal
components of IBM systems, enabling a cross-platform management solution and
simplifying the energy management of IBM servers, storage, and networking equipment.
In addition, Active Energy Manager extends the scope of energy management to include
non-IBM systems, facility providers, facility management applications, protocol data units
(PDUs), and equipment supporting the IPv6 protocol.
With Active Energy Manager, you can accurately understand the effect of the power and
cooling infrastructure on servers, storage, and networking equipment. One of its features
is to set caps for how much power the server can draw.

Figure 5-15 shows the available options in the UEFI system Power settings.

Additional settings in the UEFI for power include these:
Power/Performance Bias: Determines how aggressively the CPU will be power managed
and placed into turbo. There are two choices for Power/Performance Bias:
– Platform Controlled: The system controls the settings.
– OS Controlled: Allows the operating system to control it.
You can change the Power/Performance Bias option in the Operating Modes menu when
you select Custom Mode. See 5.2.1, "Operating modes" on page 145 for additional
information about operating modes.
Platform Controlled Type: Refers to the operating mode your system is set to run in. See
5.2.1, "Operating modes" on page 145 for additional information about operating modes.
Workload Configuration: The default selection for workload configuration is Balanced. You
can change workload configuration to I/O Sensitive.
I/O Sensitive should be used with expansion cards that require high I/O bandwidth when
the CPU cores are idle to allow enough frequency for the workload.
