c. Turn the adjusting screw "3" in direction "a"
or "b" until the specified valve clearance is
obtained.
Direction "a"
Valve clearance is increased.
Direction "b"
Valve clearance is decreased.

• Hold the adjusting screw to prevent it
from moving and tighten the locknut to
specification.
Locknut
8 Nm (0.8 m·kgf, 5.8 ft·lbf)
d. Measure the valve clearance again.
e. If the valve clearance is still out of specifi-
cation, repeat all of the valve clearance
adjustment steps until the specified clear-
ance is obtained.

5. Install:
• All removed parts

For installation, reverse the removal proce-
dure.

CHECKING THE STARTER (CHOKE) OPER-
ATION
1. Check:
• Starter (choke) operation
Unsmooth operation/Sticks → Replace.
Refer to "CHECKING THE CARBURE-
TOR" on page 6-6.

ADJUSTING THE ENGINE IDLING SPEED

TIP
Prior to adjusting the engine idling speed, the
carburetor should be adjusted properly, the air
filter element should be clean, and the engine
should have adequate compression.
1. Start the engine and let it warm up for sev-
eral minutes.
2. Attach:
• Digital tachometer
(onto the ignition coil spark plug lead)

3. Measure:
• Engine idling speed
Out of specification → Adjust.
Engine idling speed
1550–1650 r/min
