Overview of Printer Configuration for TCP/IP Printing
Overview of AIX Server Configuration
Use this section to review the general tasks for configuring your TCP/IP
network, including configuring the printer, the AIX server, and the end-user
PCs and workstations.
Use this section to review the ways in which you will configure the printer to
support TCP/IP printing.
Select which queues you want to be enabled and disabled. We suggest that
you may want to:
• Disable the Hold queue, because after a job is in the Hold queue, you must
use the Spooler utility running on Macintosh or Windows to print it or
remove it.
• Enable one of either the Direct or Print queues at the printer. When you
print, if you have chosen Direct, the jobs will be stored on and spooled from
the AIX server. If you have chosen Print, the jobs will move from the AIX
server to the printer's hard disk, from which they will be spooled.
• Make sure that the printer has a valid TCP/IP address. In addition, if your
TCP/IP network uses a gateway, enter the gateway address. If your
TCP/IP network uses a subnet mask, enter the value of the subnet mask.
• Make sure that the printer has job defaults set that are appropriate for the
majority of your users. This is especially important because these defaults
will be used for all jobs that are submitted using lpr commands.
To configure the printer, see "Configuring the IBM Network Color Printer" on
page 6–1.
Create queues on your AIX server to connect to the printer. For example, you
may want to create one queue that releases jobs immediately and one that
holds all jobs until after 5:00 p.m.
When creating the queues on the AIX server, remember that the printer itself
functions as a TCP/IP server. When setting up the AIX queues:
• Specify the printer TCP/IP address as the server address to which to
redirect the jobs
• Specify at least one of the queues on the printer. Use these names:
– for the Print queue, specify ibmcolor_print
– for the Direct queue, specify ibmcolor_direct
– for the Hold queue specify ibmcolor_hold
IBM does not recommend directing jobs to the Hold queue,
