Appendix B. Upgrading the Printer System Software

This appendix contains instructions for upgrading the system microcode on
your IBM Network Color Printer.
Before you begin:
Close all open Spooler and Downloader utility sessions. Open utility sessions
prevent the printer from going offline. To do a microcode upgrade without
risking the loss of print jobs or damage to the printer, you must be able to take
the printer offline.
The upgrade will cause these changes:
• The printer name will be the default, IBMnetcolor.
• Any connections to NetWare Print Servers will be deleted. Make sure that
you will be able to restore NetWare connections, if necessary. For example,
make sure that you have any needed NetWare server passwords.
Choosing the right upgrade procedure:
Use the following table to choose the correct microcode upgrade procedure
for your printer.
If:
You want to upgrade the microcode to
take advantage of new functionality.
The printer does not print or does not
print correctly, although when you
switch the printer on, it passes internal
diagnostics and comes to a ready state.
When you turn the printer on, it does not
pass internal diagnostics, stopping
before coming to a ready state.
Then:
Perform the microcode upgrade over
the network. See the following section,
"Upgrading Microcode over Ethernet or
Parallel Connections."
Perform the microcode upgrade over
the network. See the following section,
"Upgrading Microcode over Ethernet or
Parallel Connections."
Perform the upgrade from a SCSI II CD-
ROM drive that is attached to the
printer. See "Upgrading Microcode
using an External SCSI II CD-ROM
Drive" on page B–7.
