Creating a Print Server and Print Queues
You can create up to three print servers on the Novell NetWare file server.
These will provide print services to the printer.
When you connect the IBM Network Color Printer to a NetWare server,

the connection is between a single printer queue and one NetWare
print server. You cannot connect an individual printer queue to an
individual NetWare queue. After you have defined a connection
between one of the printer queues and one of the NetWare print
servers, the printer queue requests jobs from all of the queues on that
print server.
You may want to create a single print server with multiple queues, each of
which manages its jobs in a different way. Then:
• A user submits a print job to a given NetWare queue based on the
characteristics of the job.
• The NetWare queue configuration determines when the queue makes the
job available for printing.
• The printer queue polls all the queues on the connected print server for
jobs. As the queues on the print server make jobs available, the printer
queue handles the jobs differently, depending on whether it is the Print or
Direct queue. For instance:
– The Print queue receives jobs and stores them on the printer's hard disk.
When a job reaches the head of the Print queue, the queue spools the
job to the printer.
– The Direct queue waits until the job that is currently printing finishes and
then prints its job. The Direct queue does not store and spool jobs.
If you connect the NetWare print server to the Direct queue and

the Direct poll interval is set for frequent polling, Direct jobs can
monopolize the printer. If this becomes a problem, increase the
interval at which the Direct queue polls the NetWare server for
jobs. This allows jobs in the Print queue time to print. The poll
interval is one of the configuration items in the printer's Network
Setup menu. Instructions on configuring this and other printer
options are located in "Configuring the IBM Network Color
Printer" on page 6–1.
– IBM does not recommend connecting the Hold queue to a print server,
because once a job is in the Hold queue, you must use the Spooler utility
to move it.
The NetWare print servers that you create can be distributed among the
internal printer queues in any way you choose. For example, you might have
one NetWare print server go to the Print queue and two to the Direct queue,
or have all three go to the Direct queue. For the sake of simplicity, you may
want to start with just one print server and queue connected to the Direct or
Print queue. You can then add more queues to this print server as you need
them. If necessary, you can create and connect up to two more print servers.
