1 SERIAL COMMUNICATION PORT

1.1 GENERAL

The serial communication port on the EY 500 (default COM2) is of type RS232.
Communication parameters such as baud rate, bits per character etc. can be
programmed from the Serial/USART Menu. The port may be connected to an
external computer, a terminal, a printer, a modem or any devices that can
receive or transmit RS232 ASCII data.
Together with the EP 500 postprocessing system it is possible to receive and
display data online. This makes it possible to monitor a remote system by
means of a modem and the worldwide telephone network..
The messages transmitted and received on the serial communication port are
referred to as "telegrams".
The following information applies to all telegrams:
- All output telegrams contain a two-character header indicating the telegram
type, for example PR for Parameter Request telegrams.
- "," separates fields within a telegram.

- Two consecutive carriage returns
output telegrams implying that
in order to obtain a nice printout when using a standard printer.
- All output telegrams contain a time tag in the second field: hour, minute,
second, hundredth of a second, for example 10024310.
- A menu parameter is identified by including its path in the menu system in
the appropriate field.
For example:
/DISPLAY MENU/Echogram Menu/TVG
addresses the TVG type to be used for the echogram on the display.
