TROUBLESHOOTING

The starter motor fails to turn.
Check:
1. Main and ignition fuses
2. Battery
3. Starter motor
4. Starting circuit cutoff relay
5. Starting circuit cutoff relay (diode)
6. Starter relay
7. Main switch
8. Engine stop switch
9. Neutral switch
10. Sidestand switch
11. Clutch switch
12. Start switch
13. Diode
14. Wiring (of the entire starting system)
NOTE:
• Before troubleshooting, remove the following
part(-s):
1) seat
2) side covers
3) fuel tank (lift)
4) cowling (lift forward)
5) storage compartment/battery cover
• Troubleshoot with the following special tool(-s).

1. Main and ignition fuses
• Check the main and ignition fuses for conti-
nuity.
Refer to "CHECKING THE FUSES" in
Chapter 3
• Are the main and ignition fuses OK?
YES
ELECTRIC STARTING SYSTEM
NO
Replace the fuse(-s).

2. Battery
• Check the condition of the battery.
Refer to "CHECKING AND CHARGING THE
BATTERY" in Chapter 3.
Min. open-circuit voltage:
12.8 V or more at 20 °C (68 °F)
• Is the battery OK?
YES

3. Starter motor
• Connect the battery positive terminal 1 and
starter motor lead 2 with a jumper lead 3.
WARNING
• A wire that is used as a jumper lead must
have at least the same capacity of the
battery lead, otherwise the jumper lead
may burn.
• This check is likely to produce sparks,
therefore make sure that no flammable
gas or fluid is in the vicinity.
• Does the starter motor turn?
YES

• Clean the battery ter-
minals.
• Recharge or replace
the battery.
NO
Repair or replace the
starter motor.
