inhibited the germination of spores of the fungal pathogen Fusarium solani f. sp.
elrmartii (Regente and De la Canal, 2000). Four proteins (LTP2-LTPS) isolated from
barley leaves, were active against the bacterial pathogen of potato Clirvihirctrr
mirliiganensis subsp. sepedo~ricrrs (Molina and Garcisi-Olmedo, 1991; Molina rt a / . ,
1993) Different LTPs reported against phytopathogcns are listed in Tahle
3.
2.4.3. Transgenic resistance
by
LTP genes
It has been demonstrated that transgenic tobacco and Arabidopsis plants over-
expressing the barley LTP gene (LTP2) have enhanced resistance against bacterial
pathogens,
P. syringue
pv. tabaci and
P. syringae
pv. tomato. The defense role of
LTPs
is
supported by the observation that transgenic tobacco and Arabidopsis plants
overexpressing barley LTP showed drastic reduction of disease symptoms after
inkction of the leaves with the bacterial pathogen P. syringue (Molina and Garcia-
Olmedo, 1997). Are AMP1 has been successfully engineered into scented geranium
(Bi et ul., 1999) and rose (Li et al., 2003) where it was shown to confer resistance
against an array of pathogens. Transgenic rice containing the homologous ns-LTP
gene (Ace-AMPI) of Allium cepa showed antimicrobial activity towards M. griseu, R.
solani and
X.
oryrae pv. oryzae (Patkar and Chattoo.
2006) and transgenic wheat
showed enhanced antifungal activity against Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici (Roy-
Barman er al., 2006).
