Fan failure action (action 1)
You are here as a result of a switch message to the system indicating that a fan
failure has occurred, or you suspect a fan failure for some other reason.
When a single fan fails, the switch continues to function indefinitely unless a second
fan fails, or a very severe cooling environment exists (high ambient temperature). If
a second fan fails or the environment is such that the remaining fans cannot
maintain a safe operating temperature, the switch shuts down before any damage is
done. Replacing the fan returns the switch to normal service. If the switch has shut
down, continue with the following procedure. However, if a severe cooling
environment exists, have the customer resolve the situation.
1. If the failure is a single fan, the switch continues to function, and no damage to
2. If a fan has failed, replace the fan. See "Replacing a fan assembly" on page 48.
3. After replacing the fan (and turning the switch back on if a shutdown had
Power supply failure action (action 2)
This service action is the result of a switch message to the system indicating that a
power supply failure has occurred on a dual-power machine. The message to the
system can only occur on a dual-power machine. This is because the other power
supply keeps the machine operational allowing the message to be sent.
1. Observe the front of the switch. The power supplies are located on the left and
2. If the green LED is now on, turn the power switch off. Wait 15 seconds and turn
3. If the green LED is still off, replace the power supply. See "Replacing the power

the switch occurs. You can verify that one of the fans has failed on a Model S16
or Model S08 by checking if a fan is not turning at the back of the switch. If the
switch has shut down, you need to start up the switch to perform this check.
The switch can remain operational during this process. If the switch is an 8-port
switch and is rack mounted, you may need to slide the switch forward on its
rack mounts to access the fans.

green LED on, and the other should have the green LED off.
For the power supply with the green LED off, verify that the power cord is
seated correctly, that the power switch is in the on position, and that there is
power present in the power outlet.
