gateway. Hardware that connects incompatible networks by providing the necessary translation for both hardware
and software.
GBIC. Gigabit Interface Converter. A removable serial transceiver module designed to provide gigabaud capability for
fibre channel (FC) and other products that use the same physical layer.
Gbps. Gigabits per second.
GBps. Gigabytes per second.
gigabit. A unit of information equal to one billion bits.
hardware translative mode. Method for achieving address translation. The following two hardware translative modes
are available to a QuickLoop enabled switch:
v Standard Translative Mode: Allows public devices to communicate with private devices across the fabric.
v QuickLoop Mode: Allows private devices to communicate with other private devices across the fabric.
HBA. Host bus adapter
ID. Identification.
interswitch link (ISL). A fibre link between two switches.
IP. Internet protocol
ISL. Interswitch link. A fibre link between two switches.
isolated E_port. A port that is online but not operational between switches due to overlapping domain ID or
nonidentical parameters such as E_D_TOVs.
IT. Information technology.
JBOD. Just a bunch of drives.
L_port. A loop capable fabric port or node.
LAN. See local area network .
LED. See light-emitting diode .
light-emitting diode. A semiconductor chip that gives off visible or infrared light when activated.
LIP. Loop initialization procedure.
LLI. Low level interface.
local area network (LAN). A computer network located on a user's premises within a limited geographic area.
loop. A configuration of devices (for example, JBODS) connected to the fabric by way of an FL_port interface card.
loopback test. A test in which signals are looped from a test center through a data set or loopback switch and back
to the test center for measurement. See also loop .
LWL. Long wavelength
MAP. Maintenance action plan
MIB. Management information base. The information that is on an agent. It is an abstraction of configuration and
status information.
multicast. Multicast is used when multiple copies of data need to be sent to designated multiple destinations.
N_port. The N_port is the designation of an equipment port connected to the fabric.
NL_port. The NL_port is the designation of an equipment port connected to the fabric in a loop configuration using
an FL_port.
