Application Settings
for Conversions
The lower part of the Set-
tings dialog varies accord-
ing to the PDFMaker; most
programs include the follow-
ing options for Application
Settings:
Select "Attach source file"
to attach the source file
automatically to the con-
verted PDF document.
The Create Bookmarks
option converts ele-
ments to PDF book-
marks, such as head-
ings in Word, worksheet
names in Excel, and slide
titles in PowerPoint.
Add Links converts active
links and hypertext in the
document to PDF links.
The "Enable Accessibility
and Reflow with tagged
Adobe PDF" option
embeds specialized tags
in the file used by devices
like screen readers to
control how the docu-
ment is described and
read. (Read about acces-
sible PDF documents in
#48, "Complying with
Accessibility Standards. " )

If you use styles or headings, it's much quicker to scroll through the
list to check off the specific styles or headings you want to convert rather
than selecting a check box at the top of the dialog and then deselecting
the elements you want to exclude.
Note
If you make custom bookmark assignments in the Bookmarks tab of the
Conversion Settings dialog, your settings are overridden if you choose
Add Bookmarks to Adobe PDF in the Settings tab.
Pick What You Want
All Office PDFMakers in Windows now offer an option to create a PDF from sub-
sets of the file as well as the entire document. If you want to share information
on a particular table on one page of your annual report, for example, select the
content on the page and follow these steps:
1. Choose Adobe PDF > Convert to Adobe PDF to open the Save PDF File As
dialog.
2. Name the file, and click Options to display a dialog where you choose the
content for conversion, including the selection, a page range, or the entire
document.
3. Choose the page features from the available options. The choices depend
on the content you are converting. For example, you can't use bookmarks if
you are converting a selection.
4. Click OK to close the dialog; then click Save to convert and save the PDF
content.
What About Security?
The Acrobat PDFMaker dialog contains the Security tab, used to add password
protection to a file. If your document is being converted for further use in Acro-
bat, don't add security at this point. Wait until the document is processed in
Acrobat and then apply security settings. Otherwise, each time you open the
converted PDF document, you have to input passwords. Chapter 16 discusses
using passwords and other forms of security.
