Servicing should only be carried out according to the manufacturer's
recommendations. Maintenance and repair, which involve the assistance of other
skilled individuals, should be conducted under the supervision of someone
knowledgeable about handling flammable refrigerants.
2.2.1 AREA CHECKS
Before working on systems with flammable refrigerants, safety checks must be conducted
to minimise ignition risks. Before repair work on the refrigerating system, the following
precautions should be taken.
2.2.2 WORK PROCEDURE
To reduce the presence of flammable gas or vapour during the job, work must be carried
out following a controlled procedure.
2.2.3 GENERAL WORK AREA
All maintenance staff and individuals working in the vicinity should be informed about the
nature of the work being done. Avoid working in confined spaces and ensure the area
around the workspace is cornered off. Ensure the area is made safe by controlling
flammable materials.
2.2.4 REFRIGERANT PRESENCE CHECK
To identify potentially flammable atmospheres, check the area with a suitable refrigerant
detector before and during work. Use leak detection equipment that is compatible with
flammable refrigerants, ensuring it is spark-free, properly sealed or intrinsically safe.
2.2.5 FIRE EXTINGUISHER AVAILABILITY
If any hot work is to be performed on the refrigeration equipment or associated parts,
appropriate fire extinguishing equipment must be available. Place a dry powder or CO2 fire
extinguisher near the charging area.
2.2.6 NO IGNITION SOURCES
When working on a refrigeration system involving exposed pipework that contains or has
contained flammable refrigerant, no person should use any ignition sources that may lead
to fire or explosion. Keep all possible ignition sources, including smoking, away from the
installation, repair, removal and disposal areas where flammable refrigerant may be
released. Display 'No Smoking' signs.
2.2.7 VENTILATED AREA
Before breaking into the system or conducting hot work, ensure the area is open or
properly ventilated.
