(For NMS hardware descriptions, refer to the COMSPHERE 6800 Series Network Management System User’s/System Administrator’s Guide.) The NMS communicates with the Service Restoration Control Units via the user-defined port(s) on the IPC-1600 card installed in the NMS.

NMS device, site, vendor and facility profiles are used to store information relevant to specific devices. The contents of the profiles are described in the COMSPHERE 6800 Series Network Management System Core Command Reference Manual. The profiles must have specific data in them for modem support.
  • Page 13 Identifies the type of device and determines the icon to be used on the Connectivity Maps. Device types are unique to applications. Refer to Appendix C in the COMSPHERE 6800 Series Network Management System User’s/System Administrator’s Guide for valid device types.
  • Page 14: Site And Vendor Profiles

These profiles are used to describe and place the site location for each device, and to describe and store information about vendors. For additional information on these profiles, refer to the COMSPHERE 6800 Series Network Management System User’s/System Administrator’s Guide.

Acquire Modem Control Channel Poll List (acmccpl) command. Thereafter, the NMS continuously polls each local control device on its poll list. For a discussion of NMS poll lists, refer to COMSPHERE 6800 Series Network Management System User’s/System Administrator’s Guide.

ADp mode. The 6800 Series NMS allows you to monitor circuits and equipment in real time, to invoke diagnostic tests, to set thresholds for alert reporting and speed changes, and to design your own applications for the general purpose external leads.
  • Page 17: Dataphone Ii Diagnostic Network

In this network, all COMSPHERE devices must conform to the restrictions of the DATAPHONE II network topology when they are replacing point-to-point and multipoint circuits. The 6800 Series NMS identifies a modem and its position in the diagnostic tree by the device’s link-level address using the following guidelines: •...

Therefore, the address of each intermediate tributary modem must be included in the address. For more information on addressing, refer to Appendix D of the COMSPHERE 6800 Series Network Management System User’s/System Administrator’s Guide. Changing Protocol Modes As your type of diagnostic network changes, you must change the diagnostic protocol mode in which your devices operate.

Alternate mode address field and be sure that no device has a network address value greater than 80. For more information on device addressing, refer to Appendix D of the COMSPHERE 6800 Series Network Management System User’s/System Administrator’s Guide.
  • Page 20 To avoid problems, use mnemonic device names when specifying individual devices within routines. 6800-A2-GB20-20 = the control channel = the Advanced Diagnostic protocol mode network address calculated by NMS.

COMSPHERE 6800 Series Network Management System 4. Update the trouble ticket database records, if you wish, to reflect address differences. In particular, the trouble ticket and alert databases contain records that are keyed to a device’s previous mode address. New trouble tickets and alerts are keyed against the device’s new address.
  • Page 22: Protocol Mode Conversion From A Front Panel

However, the address conversion is not automatically reflected in the 6800 Series NMS. The recommended way to change the protocol mode of a diagnostic tree is by executing the Change Protocol Mode command (chpm) in the 6800 Series NMS.
  • Page 23 COMSPHERE 6800 Series Network Management System If you do decide to change the protocol mode from the front panel with an active NMS managing the network, use the following procedure to maintain and restore proper communications with the NMS after the protocol mode change is accomplished: 1.

COMSPHERE 6800 Series Network Management System Monitoring Health and Status The 6800 Series NMS can be used to monitor and display the health and status of APL, DDD, and DDS devices in the network using the commands listed in Table 1-4. These commands are accessed from the System Management window.
  • Page 30: Performing Tests

Performing Tests The 6800 Series NMS contains a set of commands (Table 1-5) that allow you to test and/or manipulate specified network devices. These commands are available from the System Management window. These commands are classified as disruptive. A disruptive command is one that interrupts primary data transmission.
  • Page 31 You can combine a series of commands or tests into a routine. This routine can also be used in an alert driven routine. For more information on routines, refer to the COMSPHERE 6800 Series Network Management System User’s/System Administrator’s Guide.

Setting Thresholds The 6800 Series NMS gives you the ability to change the thresholds that allow you to monitor and track the performance of a 3400/4400 Series device and to monitor channel and line conditions of the analog private line. The following threshold parameters are provided.
