NMS communicates with its network devices using one of two diagnostic protocol modes: the

Advanced Diagnostic protocol (ADp) or the DATAPHONE II (DPII) diagnostic protocol. NMS

uses these protocol modes to collect and process diagnostic information from the network devices.

If any of the devices in an NMS diagnostic tree are DATAPHONE II devices, the modems use the

DATAPHONE II protocol. If the NMS diagnostic tree consists of all COMSPHERE devices, the

Advanced Diagnostic protocol (ADp) mode is used for device communications.

NMS communicates with the DATAPHONE II modems, the DATAPHONE II DSUs, the

COMSPHERE modems and the 3600 Series DSUs via the modem control channels ports provided

by a single Emulexr DCP/MUXI card. (For NMS hardware descriptions, refer to the

The NMS communicates with the Service Restoration Control Units via the user-defined port(s) on

the IPC-1600 card installed in the NMS.

The NMS communicates with ANALYSIS NMS devices via one port on a dedicated IPC-900 card

installed in the NMS. This port is used for uploading the ANALYSIS NMS device configurations

to the NMS for alert management, and for establishing a cut-through session to the ANALYSIS

system in order to issue commands to the ANALYSIS NMS devices, to execute diagnostic tests on

these devices, and also to use remote printing capabilities.
