Identifies the type of device and determines the icon to be used on the Connectivity Maps.
Device types are unique to applications. Refer to Appendix C in the COMSPHERE 6800
Series Network Management System User's/System Administrator's Guide for valid device
types.
Identifies the protocol in which a device will run. The protocol that is used depends on the
configuration of the individual diagnostic tree. A diagnostic tree consists of the head
control device and all downstream devices connected to it diagnostically.
Valid entries are dataphone for a device on a tree running in DATAPHONE II mode, or
advanced for a device on a tree running in ADp mode.
You can change the protocol of a device using the Change Protocol Mode (chpm)
command. When you issue this command to change mode, the Protocol mode field is
updated. If the Protocol mode field is not properly set for the device, tests, commands,
and polling will not function properly. You will receive an NR (no response) message for
normal polling that is directed to a device in the wrong protocol mode.
Valid entries are as follows:
supported
Commands can be directed to the device from the NMS and alerts are
reported back.
unsupported
The device is displayed on the map but it cannot communicate with
the NMS.
Identifies the product name. Valid entries are comsphere (for 3400/4400 and 3900 Series
modems, 3600 Series DSUs, DDD modems, and 3800 Series DDD modems), dataphone
(for DATAPHONE II modems), and 3500 dsu (for 3500 Series DSUs).
Identifies the appropriate model number for the specified device type. If NMS is able to
communicate with the device, this information may be reported by the device itself. Valid
model numbers that can be entered in this field are listed in Appendix A of the
COMSPHERE 6800 Series Network Management System User's/System Administrator's
Guide.
Handles the conflict between short- and long-form addresses in DATAPHONE II and
ADp modes. Populate this field if you expect to change the device's protocol mode. It is
not validated for uniqueness.
In ADp mode, short-form addressing is not valid. All devices upstream of the designated
device must be included in the link-level address. If this is not done properly, conflicts
arise when mode conversions are done: either addresses are missing (DATAPHONE II
mode to ADp mode) or addresses are there that should not be (ADp mode to
DATAPHONE II mode.)
