COMSPHERE 6800 Series Network Management System
If you do decide to change the protocol mode from the front panel with an active NMS managing
the network, use the following procedure to maintain and restore proper communications with the
NMS after the protocol mode change is accomplished:
1-14
1. Verify that all devices on the diagnostic tree have complete, correct poll lists, and that there
are no active alerts in the network.
2. If any tests are running on any devices on the diagnostic tree, execute the Abort (abort)
command to the control modem at the head of the diagnostic tree.
3. Wait until no devices in the network are reporting a Test Mode status and repeat Step 2, if
necessary.
4. At the control modem at the head of the diagnostic tree, change the protocol mode to the
new mode.
5. Wait long enough for the mode switch to take place in the subnetwork and long enough for
the entire subnetwork to report current health and status information. Then verify that there
are no NR (no response) alerts in the network. If there are NRs, the problem may be that
the device(s) with the alert(s) did not switch protocol modes. Clear this problem by
changing the mode at the affected modem's front panel.
6. If you have any non-local control devices that were on the DATAPHONE II mode
extended poll list, add these devices to their upstream device's poll list.
7. Once all devices in the network have changed protocol mode, edit every device profile of
the devices in the tree to reflect the change in the link-level address. At the same time,
change the Protocol mode field to reflect the change in protocol mode. When the change
occurred, the head control modem switched from using one address to another. If the mode
was switched from DATAPHONE II to ADp mode, the control modem changed from its
local address to its network address. If the mode was switched from ADp to DATAPHONE
II mode, the control modem changed from its network address to its local address. In both
cases, this means that NMS no longer has the correct link-level address for the control
modem. Since all devices on the subnetwork use the control modem's address as part of
their link-level address, those addresses are also incorrect.
8. Convert the Link-level address and Alternate address fields in the device profile to their
proper form, where necessary. Short-form addresses are invalid in ADp mode, so you must
not only change the control modem's address portion of the link-level address, but also
insert the missing G2/G4 tributary network address(es) in all short-form addresses.
Similarly, when converting from ADp to DATAPHONE II mode, the network addresses of
G2/G4 tributary devices should be deleted from the new link-level address for all devices
on the converted diagnostic tree.
