BIRST DIAGNOSTICS

External Loop-Back Connectors
The 65-218 plugin module is fitted with the ability to perform self diagnosis of its switching matrix using the BIRST
tool. This built-in diagnostic tool requires the user to remove all front panel cabling from the unit before running the
application. Also loop-back connectors should be fitted to the front panel to enable the routing of internally generated
test signals to fully test the matrix and isolation switches.
The required loop-back cable assembly (part number 64-218-BAT509) comprises two interconnected connectors
as outlined below:
50-pin female D-type loop-back connector 'A' (fitted to the module's X1-50 connector during testing).
9-pin female D-type loop-back connector 'B' (fitted to the module's Y1-4 connector during testing).
This assembly should be ordered at the same time as the 65-218 matrix. Replacements can be ordered from
Pickering Interfaces or the user can construct their own by using 50 and 9-pin female D-type connectors and
referring to the following wiring information:
For more information on the BIRST diagnostic tool, please refer to the user manual which is available from the
