FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

The 65-218 is a modular switching system based on the 65-200 chassis and is designed to provide a high density
flexible matrix solution by the addition of plugin modules. The component parts are as follows:
The scalable 65-200 chassis is the basis of the system and consists of a backplane, power supply and
controller card housed in a 2U rack mountable chassis. The backplane is capable of hosting up to 6 plugin
modules and distributes power, control signals and matrix Y connections between the plugins. The controller
card is based on an embedded processor and provides control and management of the matrix via an LXI
compliant LAN interface. For more information on the modular chassis, please refer to the 65-200 user manual.
The 65-218-101 is a 50x4 matrix plugin module with 5 separate 4-wire Y bus backplane connections and
a rating of 400V. The matrix X connections are routed to a front panel mounted 50-pin D-type via isolation
relays. To allow matrix expansion, X bus loop-thru connections are also provided. These connect directly to the
matrix without isolation relays and are routed to a second 50-pin D-type connector. The matrix Y connections
are routed to the backplane's five analog buses via five banks of isolation relays. User access to the matrix
Y-bus is via a 9-pin D-type connector on the front panel. Two sets of Y connections are provided; one via
isolation relays, the other connected directly to the matrix as a loop-thru connection for matrix expansion.
The use of the chassis backplane's analog buses allows larger matrices to be created by internally linking
the Y connections between the plugin modules. A switching diagram for the module is shown in Figure 2-1.
The 65-218-111 is a 50x4 matrix plugin module without analog bus access and a rating of 750V. The
matrix X connections are routed to a front panel mounted 50-pin D-type via isolation relays. To allow
matrix expansion, X bus loop-thru connections are also provided. User access to the matrix Y-bus is via
a 9-pin D-type connector on the front panel. Two sets of Y connections are provided, both are routed
directly to the matrix, one is the Y connection, the other is a loop-thru connection for matrix expansion.
As this plugin module has no access to the chassis backplane's analog buses, matrix expansion is
carried out using external loop-thru cables. A switching diagram for the module is shown in Figure 2-2.
The 65-218-121-CC is a 50x4 matrix plugin module without analog bus access, a rating of 1000V and has the
same architecture as the 65-218-111 plugin module described above.
