Technology Note: How Auto Firmware Works
RXT drives contain firmware, and RXT media packs store a copy of the drive firmware on the pack as Auto
Firmware. For the RXT drive to read data from a RXT media pack, the drive firmware must be at or exceed the
media's Auto Firmware level. If it isn't, you are notified to upgrade the drive with the pack's Auto Firmware.
Drive has firmware that writes
data using a newer format; the
drive firmware is copied onto the
pack as Auto Firmware.

NO USER ACTION REQUIRED
• An RXT drive is running a version of
firmware that changes how data is
written to the media.
• A RXT media pack is loaded that has
never been written to using this
firmware.
• The RXT drive writes Auto Firmware to
the RXT media pack, and writes data to
the pack using the newest format.
Note: All RXT drives with the most recent level of firmware can read data

Pack now has data

This pack is put into a RXT drive that can't
read the pack's data because the drive's
firmware is not at or above the pack's Auto
Firmware version. A message notifies the
user to update the RXT drive, optionally
using the pack's Auto Firmware.
If the pack has User Firmware at a higher
level than the Auto Firmware, the user
could upgrade using User Firmware.

• The user is informed of the
