A
Access Protection
Access to the programs and data of a programming device can be
protected by passwords.
ACPI
Advanced Configuration and Power Interface.
APM
Advanced Power Management.
Application
An application is a program which builds directly on, for example, the
MS-DOS/Windows operating system. Applications on your
programming device are the STEP 5 Basic package, STEP 7, etc.
ASCII Editor
With an ASCII editor you can process (that is, edit) text files which are
stored in ASCII code (American Standard Code of Information
Interchange).

Base Memory
The base memory is a part of the main memory. It is 640 Kbytes for all
programming devices. The size is entered in the SETUP menu under
the entry "Base Memory" and is not changed even if the memory is
extended.
BIOS
BASIC Input Output System
Boot Diskette
A diskette which includes a boot sector, enabling it to load the
operating system.
Booting
A loading operation which transfers the operating system to the main
memory.
Bps
The speed (in bits per second) with which information is transmitted
over a data link.
