3.8 System Cooling

Fans

Four 4-cm heavy-duty fans provide cooling for the system. Fans are hot-swapped and can
be replaced without powering down the system. The electrical connections are automatically
made when a fan is inserted into its slot.
Make sure the chassis cover is only off for a short time and makes a good seal when replaced
for the cooling air to circulate properly through the system.

Installing Fans

Fan speed is controlled by system temperature via IPMI. If a fan fails, the remaining fans
will ramp up to full speed. Replace any failed fan at your earliest convenience with the same
type and model (the system can continue to run with a failed fan).
1. With the server powered on, remove the chassis cover and inspect the fans to see
which one has failed.
2. Power down the server and remove power from the system as described in section 3.1.
3. Remove the fan housing from the chassis by removing the two screws which attach the
housing to the chassis. These screws are located in the mounting thru holes on either
side of the fan housing. Set these screws aside for later use.
Note: Figure is for illustrative purposes only. The fan positions may be different in your system.
