 In the event of a power failure, hydrogen gas may continue to flow from the supply
even if the ICP-MS is completely off. Always manually shut off the hydrogen gas
supply valve when there is no power to the ICP-MS.
Instead of using pressurized gas cylinders as a source of hydrogen, consider using a
hydrogen gas generator instead. These devices only produce the required amount of
hydrogen "on demand" while the ICP-MS is in operation, and there is no storage of
hydrogen gas when the system is not being used. Gas generators are available from
Analytik Jena as optional equipment, as well as from most major industrial/scientific
gas suppliers.
The ICP-MS is available with an accessory that introduces a small flow of oxygen into
the plasma for certain specific applications (the direct analysis of organic solvents). As
with hydrogen gas, oxygen has several specific safety precautions that end users
should be aware of.
 Oxygen gas is a powerful oxidizer which will rapidly accelerate combustion of many
materials.
 Oxygen cylinders should be handled with care because serious explosions have
resulted from contact between oil and high pressure oxygen. Oil or grease should
never be used on connections to an oxygen cylinder or gas line carrying oxygen.
Oxygen is incompatible with all flammable materials and should be stored
separately.
 Never allow oil, greases, and other readily-combustible substances to come in
contact with oxygen cylinders, valves, regulators, and fittings.
Heat, ozone, vapors, and fumes generated by the plasma can be hazardous, and must
be extracted from the instrument by an exhaust system. Ensure that an exhaust
system of the appropriate type is fitted to the instrument. The system must be vented
to the outside air in accordance with local regulations, and never within the building.
 Regularly check the exhaust system to ensure that it is functioning correctly.
 Always switch the exhaust fan on BEFORE igniting the plasma.
Use of the ICP-MS and accessories may involve materials, solvents, and solutions
which are flammable, corrosive, toxic, or otherwise hazardous. Careless, improper, or
unskilled use of such materials, solvents, and solutions can cause explosions, fire,
toxicity, and other hazards that can cause death, serious personal injury, and/or
damage to equipment and property.
 Always ensure that laboratory safety practices governing the use, handling, and
disposal of hazardous materials are strictly observed. These safety practices should
include the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including appropriate
safety clothing and hand/eye protection.
