SLC W 48xx Door Seals & Leaks
You may encounter a service request for an SLC washer that is leaking from
the bottom of the door. While there is no single cause or cure, the following
items should be checked:
Was there an article of clothing caught in the door?
Are the latest door lock & hinge support installed?
Could the leak be coming from the detergent dispenser?
Is the front panel possibly bowed in (from rough handling or
shipping)?
Is there debris on the door glass or door seal?
Is the door seal warped or damaged?
While not very common, we have seen instances where the front panel has
been bowed in. This could happen if the installer used his knees to bump the
washer into its final position. If you suspect this, the panel can be shimmed
out with some washers.
Other scenarios could include replacing the door seal. The W 4800 & W 4840
were shipped with an outer seal clamping ring made of metal, with the two
ends joined by a spring. The W 4842 and W 4802 washers now include a
new improved clamping ring made from plastic. This ring has a toothed latch
joining the ends, replacing the spring. We recommend that any time a door
seal is replaced, this new clamping ring also gets installed. Since the
shape of this new ring is asymmetrical, there is a right way and a wrong way
to install it. The following instructions illustrate the correct way.
As illustrated here, there is a triangular marker on the front side of the ring.
This marker must face out.
The toothed clamp that joins the ends of the ring should be compressed
using slip-joint pliers such as Channel Locks
that should be meshed for proper tension is 9; however, a minimum of 7 and
a maximum of 11 are specified. If you encounter difficulty compressing the
clamp, you can lubricate the groove in the door seal with soapy water.
