STARTER MAGNETIC SWITCH
INSPECTION
Use a 12 volt DC power source and a continuity tester
to test the starter magnetic switch.
1. Disconnect the battery charging connector on the
handlebar
(P.

2. Peel back the two black rubber boots covering the
two large terminals.
3. Check for continuity between the two large
terminals on the starter magnetic switch. There
should be no continuity.
4. Disconnect the yellow wire terminal and the bullet
connector (black wire to yellow wire) on the
magnetic switch
(P.
5. Connect a 12 volt DC power source, such as a
starting battery, across the terminal and bullet
connector (black wire side). Once power is
supplied, you should hear an audible "click" from
the starter magnetic switch.
6. Measure continuity between the two large
terminals. There should be continuity.
7. If you do not hear an audible click and do not have
continuity between the two large terminals with 12
volt power applied across the two small terminals,
replace the starter magnetic switch
Note
While there may be other (or faster) methods to test the starter magnetic switch for proper operation, the test shown above
singles out the magnetic switch from the rest of the electric-starter system, and will prevent misdiagnosis caused from another
