Voice Quality Troubleshooting Guide
The handset audio tap recordings will help you identify these cases and save time and effort.

HANDSET AUDIO TAP

Audio problems can be introduced at any point in the audio path between the parties in the call.
Wireshark and other monitoring tools do not necessarily monitor what the caller actually hears
because the audio can be modified by down stream devices. To record what is actually heard
by a caller, you need a handset audio tap such as the "THAT-2 Telephone Handset Audio Tap"
You insert the handset tap into the handset cord and then record the audio using a PC sound
card or other recording device. You should also get a Wireshark trace of the call while it is being
recorded with the handset audio tap.
VOIP BANDWIDTH MANAGEMENT ON MIVOICE BUSINESS
PLATFORMS
Quality issues on VoIP calls can be caused by a lack of bandwidth. The Bandwidth Management
feature in the MiVoice Business platform allows you to track and manage bandwidth
consumption by the VoIP media streams. The bandwidth used by the media stream is measured
between zones of co-located IP phones. At predetermined bottleneck points in the network, it
performs the following functions for the voice data packets:
Measures and reports consumed and available bandwidth
Generates maintenance alarms when bandwidth consumption exceeds configured thresh-
old levels.
Provides Call Admission Control, that is, the rejection of new calls through a specific bot-
tleneck point when consumed bandwidth exceeds maximum configured levels.
Use bandwidth statistics and alarm thresholds to ensure that adequate bandwidth is allocated
between devices in the network. If Bandwidth Management alarms are occurring between zones
on a regular basis, you should increase the bandwidth available between the zones. On the
other hand, if alarms are never generated between two zones, the Bandwidth limit for the media
stream between those two zones may be set too high. Some of the bandwidth could possibly
be reallocated to data requirements.
You use the following MiVoice Business System Administration Tool forms to manage
bandwidth:
Bandwidth Management Configuration
15-Minute Historical Bandwidth Statistics
Current Bandwidth Statistics.
Refer to the System Administration Tool online help for instructions.

INTERNET SPEED TEST

Test your internet upload and download speeds from a PC on the LAN using a speed test tool.
