THE ISSUE IS

All calls involving a
Ethernet cable that connects IP Phone to
MiVoice Business controller or layer 2
single IP phone
switch is routed in close proximity to
power conductors. Electrical interference
from power cable is resulting in a voice
quality issue.
Ethernet cable that connects phone to
network connector is too long.
On all calls
Hum is occurring on calls due to faulty
power over Ethernet (PoE) from layer 2
involving one or

Excessive collisions caused by auto
negotiate mismatch
Excessive collisions caused by
insufficient cabling. For example, 10000
Mbps being negotiated across a CAT 5
cable that can only really support 100
Mbps.

CORRECTIVE ACTION
Route Ethernet cables separately away from
any power cables. Refer to the MiVoice
Business Hardware Technical Manual for
Ethernet cabling guidelines.
Ensure the cables used for IP phone
connections are a maximum of 1.5 m (5 ft) in
length. Refer to the MiVoice Business
Hardware Technical Manual for Ethernet
cabling guidelines.
Check PoE settings on layer 2 switch. Install a
power brick on the phones that are
experiencing the humming issue.
Use PoE from layer 2 switch or replace power
brick.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Configure Bandwidth Management zones.
Refer to the MiVoice Business Engineering
Guidelines and System Administration Tool
online help for details.
Add bandwidth.
Ensure Quality of Service settings are
correct on all network components (MiVoice
Business platforms, layer 2 switches, layer 3
switches, routers, and VLANs). Refer to the
MiVoice Business Engineering Guidelines
for QoS guidelines.
Verify Service Level Agreements with WAN
link vendor and ensure that the vendor
supports the CODECs. Also ensure that they
correctly match the priority bits that you are
using.
Check switch settings.
Upgrade cabling.
