TYPICAL TIRE PLACARD
INSIDE GLOVE COMPARTMENT ODOR
• Too little air pressure can result in excilSsive
tire heat, abnormal tire wear, adverse vehicle
handling and r.duc.d fu.1 economy.
• Too much air pressure can result
in
abnormal
lire wear, adv."" ..hocl. rid. and handlmg,
and increased susc.ptibility to damage by
road Impacts.
Tire pnessures should be check.d when the tires
are "cold" at least Dna a month (.nd pr.ferably
often.r) Dr belore long trips Dr when h.avily
lo.ded. Th. following points should be observed
when checking and setting tire pressurl!S:
1. Cold tire pressure ratings are applicable when
a vehicle has been inoperative for 3 hours or
more, or driven less than 1 mile.
2. Tire inflation pressure may increase as much
as 6 pounds per square inch
(p~)
when hot
(.lter ..hiele has been dri..n 10 miles or at
sp.eds of more than 60 miles p.r
hou~.
00
not "bleed" or reduce pressures when tires
.re hot from driving.
3. For continuous high speed operation {over
75 mph}, increase tire inflation pressure 4 psi
above the recommended pressures up to a
maximum of 32 psi cold pressure for load
range B tires, Dr 40
p~
lor 0 load rang. tires.
Sustained sp.eds Ibow 75 mph are not
recommended when the 4
p~
adjustment
would require pressures greater than the
above maximum pressures..
4. Always use • t"e p......r. g..ge when check·
ing pressures as the appearance of a tire can
be deceiving. For example, radial ply tires, in
comparison wnh bias ply tires at the same
pressure, m.y have the app.arana of being
under·inflated.
Vehiele lOlding-Do not load your vehicle beyond
the vehiele capacity (total pounds) shown on the
tire placard. This figure represents the design ca-
pacity 01 the vehiel., not merely of the tires. When
towing tr.ilers, ·the .1I0wable passenger and cargo
load must be reduad by an .mount equal to the
trailer tongue load on the treiler hitch. (See "Trail-
er Hauling" in Section 1 of this manual.) Vehicles
equipped with luggage racks do not haw a ..hiel.
lood capacity groater than specified on the tire
placard.
