• Front disc brake adjustment is made auto-

NOTE: "Riding the brake" by _lOg your
foot on the brake pedal when not Intending to
brake can cause abnormally
h
brake tem-
peratures, excessive lining wear and possible
damage to the brakes.
Power Brakes
• On your Cadillac if power assist to the brakes
is interrupted due to a stalled engine or some
malfunction,
hw
or more brake applications
can be made using reserve power.
• If the brake pedal is held down, the system is
designed to bring the car to a full stop on
reserve power. However, the reserve power is
partially depleted each time the brake pedal
~
applied and released.
• When reserve power is exhausted, the vehicle
can still be stopped by applying greater forc.
to the pedal.
In the event of power assist being lost, the use
of both feet on the pedal is recommended. The
power brake pedal is sufficiently wide to accom-
modate the use of both feet.
Braking on Hilly Tlfrain-The transmission is
designed to supplement the braking system with
engine braking when driving on hilly terrain. To
decrease brake usage, place the transmission selec-
tor lever in right·hand "ORIVE" when descending
medium grades and in the
COW "L"
range for
maximum engine braking assist when descending
steep grades. Avoid engine braking on slippery
roads because the drive wheels could slide or skid.
P'arking Brake
• To set parking brake, fully depress foot pedal
at far left side.
• For maximum holding power, depress regular
brake pedal with the other foot at the same
time.
• With engine running, parking brake will
remain set only when transmission is in
"PARK" or "NEUTRAL".
• Parking brake is designed to release automati-
cally when transmission selector is mO'l!d to
any drive or reverse position with engine
running.
• A distinct sound should be heard when pedal
releases.
• Should it be necessary to release brake manu-
ally, raise hand release lever located on upper
