Chapter 5 Setting up a Two-Tier System

Establishing a Two-Tier System

The following steps need to be completed:
STEP (a): Connect the 2nd-tier switch(es) to the base switch
STEP (b): Connect the keyboard, mouse, monitor and audio devices to the base switch
STEP (c): Connect servers to the two-tier system

Step (a): Connect 2nd-Tier Switches to the Base Switch

The DVI-I to VGA adapter shipped with the ThinkSystem Analog 1x8 KVM, 1754-A1T
(SM27A17643), switch is required for establishing a two-tier KVM system.
To cascade ThinkSystem Analog 1x8 KVM, 1754-A1T (SM27A17643), switches:
1. Turn OFF all SM27A17643 switches, including the base switch.
2. Connect the 2nd-tier SM27A17643 switch to the base switch.
a) Connect the passive DVI-I to VGA adapter shipped with the KVM to the ThinkSystem
Analog 1x8 KVM, 1754-A1T (SM27A17643), cable.
■ Plug the adapter's VGA end into the VGA connector of the ThinkSystem Analog
1x8 KVM, 1754-A1T (SM27A17643), cable.
b) Plug the connectors of the ThinkSystem Analog 1x8 KVM, 1754-A1T (SM27A17643),
into the 'Console 1' connectors of the 2nd-tier switch.
c) Connect the RJ-45 end of the 2nd-tier's ThinkSystem Analog 1x8 KVM, 1754-A1T
(SM27A17643), cable to any channel port of the base switch.
